the island of Mykonos is the most beautiful place in the world! we had a lot of fun and definitely got in a lot of R&R because it snowed for the first time in 20 years!!! yes, that's right, on this exotic island we thought we were visiting, for about two of the four days that we were there, there was a giant wind/snow storm going on outside. we made the most of it, and at one point even attempted to rent a car because it was too cold to walk around. i was going to be the driver. you can only imagine how desperate we were. that eventually fell through because the man who was going to rent us a car never showed up. god must have been doing you a favor, dad. apparently the whole island shuts down during the off season (october-april) and the majority of places were not open. guess we didn't do the proper research for this trip! haha. still the most magical city full of warm people. :)
the greek island of syros, a view from the ferry on the way to mykonos
the bluest water i've ever seen
another shot of beautiful syros
so there's a story with these pants. a hilarious one actually. these pants belong to my friend ben. these pants are on sitting on the chair in front of me on the ferry. ben was not on the ferry. the pants contained ben's wallet, cell phone and possibly passport. how does this happen? well i'll tell you.
thinking like logical college students, we decided that rather than turning in early for our 7 a.m. ferry, we should stay out the entire evening and just not go to sleep. soo... about 4:30 a.m. we make the very illogical decision to go back to our hotel so that we can squeeze in at least 30 minutes of sleep before the cabs come to take us to our ferry.
the next thing i know, i wake up to a greek woman slamming on our hotel room door screaming "WAKE UP!!! YOUR CABS ARE OUTSIDE!" so naturally, i run to the door and the lady starts rapidly explaining to me in a thick accent that the other hotel room with my friends in it refuses to wake up. she gives me the master key to the hotel so i can go into my friends' hotel room and physically shake them awake. normally that would be enough to wake people up. but, in this case my keegan had decided to literally pin his bed against the door before he went to bed. i then had no choice other than to body slam the door over and over until the door had opened a few inches so that i could scream at the top of my lungs "GET UP!!!!!"
so- from there the six of us run around like chickens with our heads cut off sitting on our suitcases to zip whatever made it inside closed as fast as possible. the four girls get their act together enough to run downstairs as fast as possible and jump in one of the cabs waiting outside. we had no choice but to leave the boys in the dust because they clearly thought that this was a joke, even though my friend kat screamed at them multiple times "THIS IS NOT A JOKE!"
then- we arrive at the ferry and get on with no problems. as we sit down at the ferry's coffee bar and ponder whether or not the boys would be joining us in mykonos today, one of the ferry's workers approaches us and asks in a frenchy accent "excuse me girls, but do you know a mr. keegan goo-dee-ay?" he was referring to me friend keegan, whose name is pronounced gow-dee. after admitting that we know our fratty american friend, he informs us that they have goo-dee-ay's passport at the front desk. to this point, we still have not a clue how keegan's passport made it to the ferry before his body did.
next thing you know our cab driver runs onto the ferry and hands me a pair of mens blue jean pants saying something frantic like "these are the red-headed boy's." he runs back off the ferry before we can ask any questions and i'm screaming as he leaves "WE HAVE THE PANTS BUT WHERE IS THE BOY???!" i then realize that only is ben missing and we have his pants, but we ALSO have his wallet and cellphone. ben was somewhere in athens not on this ferry, walking around with possibly no pants on and without a wallet or means of communication. an utter disaster. the girls and i start thinking on our feet as to what the best possible way to handle this situation is.
about five minutes later, keegan rolls on to the boat (with sunglasses on) and takes his time getting coffee then comes over to inform us that ben will not be making the ferry today. the girls are like "what do you mean he's not making the ferry??! how did his pants get here??"
apparently after we got out of our cab the hotel had called our cab driver asking him to return to the hotel and drive ben's pants back to the ferry. ben also realized this problem when his cab arrived at the ferry and had no money to pay. so- ben drove back to the hotel to retrieve his pants and once there realized the hotel already had his pants in transport on the way to the ferry. basically, we ended up having to stand at the edge of the ferry where the cars are parked begging the controllers to wait one more minute for our friend who should be arriving any minute. they began to close the ramp and keegan had to give a guard ben's wallet and phone to give to the ferry office (who took all of his money out of his wallet, btw). so ben ended up stuck in athens with an empty wallet for the day, and his empty wallet also had to buy an emergency plane ticket to mykonos later that day.
from that point on, every time we referred to keegan he was mr. keegan goo-dee-ay, and ben was on quite a budget for the remainder of the trip.
moral of the story: girls know how to get themselves together better than boys.
i will say, kudos to the boys for having an awesome european experience once they were both on the island. on ash monday, a big religous holiday for greeks, the boys ran into the older greek man who invited them to their family dinner where they ate fresh seafood and urchins and drank wine in this small building on the beach. COOL.
the view from the hotel's pool in mykonos. heaven.
all of the buildings are painted white and most doors and windows are painted in shades of blue. one of the most magical places i have ever been.
this is the area right by mykonos' little venice
doing a touristy asian pose in front of the famous windmills of the island
getting all artsy with our photography
i won't go on and on about food the way i did in my athens post. but i think this photo speaks for itself. YUMMY
the point cafe. one of the maybe ten restaurants open during the off season on the island. it was even open 24 hours a day. and man was it delicious.
this was just too precious not to share. i think i should move here after i graduate and open an art store with signs like this. wouldn't that be just perfect.
down by the harbor where the bullfrogs jump from bank to bank. not really haha.
just a little friend i found enjoying the cold weatha.
pretty pics of the harbor
hanzy modeling
my pretty girlfriends on our hotel balcony at sunset
this pic sums up what we did on the two days we were stuck inside because of the wind/snow storm. ate suckers, bummed around, watched music videos in the lobby, drank wine, snacked, etc.
you can see some of the massive hail balls in this picture. unbelievable that we would be in mykonos the first time it snows in 20 years.
hanzy and i at blue blue for a day of card games, homemade strawberry milkshakes and greek pizza. when life gives you lemony weather, have strawberry milkshakes.
pretty pretty pretty. can't wake to go back for my honeymoon someday. hopefully my future hub will be down. hahah! in like ten years no worries peeps.
